History

In 1949, four men with boiler making expertise saw a need to provide specialised services to the fledgling industries growing in Durban at the time. Armed with their skills and a passion to succeed, they created Elgin Engineering, a company founded on customer service, innovation and reliability.

As the business expanded the entrepreneurs decided to build their own foundry - which still stands on the site today. Soon thereafter a stainless steel division was started. Among other things it manufactured stainless steel sinks common in every household. Acknowledging its growth and potential Elgin Engineering was registered as a company in 1953.

Over the years, the company has moved with the times. In 1978 it was acquired by Murray & Roberts and grew significantly, through mergers with complementary companies. At the height of the acquisition trail during the 90’s, the company augmented its skills to include an industrial painting and heat-sealing division. A successful BEE and management buyout in 2004 saw Elgin devolve from Murray and Roberts and become the foundation to form the Elgin Group.

With its Head Office situated in Durban and with regional offices throughout South Africa, Elgin Engineering has become recognised as a leader in one stop engineering solutions in Southern Africa and worldwide.
